To Pat: My father served with the 562nd AAA Bn in the ETO with the 9th Army. I recently submitted his unit's combat history to a great AAA website dedicated to AAA units that fought in WWII. I noticed that the 197 AAA Bn history is included on this website. The link is http://www.antiaircraft.org/197.htm in case you have not previously come across this very informative site. There is some very good information on the action of the 197th in the Aachen area as well as in the Ardennes and Central Europe. Interestingly it also reports that the 197th Bn achieved a distinction not surpassed by any unit in the First Army--it covered a front of 120 miles across four countries; Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany.

I agree, Pat, thanks to Lone Sentry for giving recognition to AAA units of WWII. Their role and contribution is often overshadowed but none the less important. I have been helping my father (89 years old!) research the 562nd's movements through Europe and I know he appreciates finding websites who give credit to AAA units. :-)

My wife's late grandfather was Major John Smith Raworth M.C., the commander of 155 battery. He never really talked about the battle or his PoW experience so we're finding out quite a lot now. What an epic battle and truly gallant stand. I must admit the poem '155' brought a tear to the eye. I'd like to know if it's possible to get a print of the oil painting commissioned by the R.A. Institute in 1964 of the battle. I'm also trying to find the Illustrated London News image of The VC Battery, again very difficult. This and any other info' on 155 battery would be much appreciated.

"One PBY, piloted by Lt. (jg.) Leon H. Freeman, USN, rescued a B-25 crew one mile off the tip of Cape St. George. During the rescue operations, shore batteries fired on the plane, and about 100 rounds of 20-mm. fire landed in an area from 10 to 50 feet away from the flying boat. "

My dad, Jim Hall, was First Mechanic on this plane. The pilot and crew received citations.

Looking Closer at this photo I recognize the tail design which is a Circle S. These tail designs were indicative of XXVI Fighter Command in the Canal Zone. The Circle S indicates this plane is in the 51st Fighter Squadron which was the "Battlin Billygoats", stationed at Howard Field Panama CZ. You can also see the Billygoat insignia just above the text Peach on the nose of the plane.

This was my grandfathers squadron as well. I indeed have a photo of this plane parked beside my grandfather's P-38. Notice the battle number on the engine. Its 46, my grandfather's plane was 47. I knew I had seen the nose art before. I have a great photos with my grandad standing in front of his plane with Georgia Peach II in the background. Here is a link to the photo I speak of. I have the originals. Do you have any links to this plane or this unit? Or any other photos?

My grandfather served in Panama at Howard Field in WWII. He was a crew chief in the 51st Fighter Squadron. His plane was the "Double Bourbon", it was a a P-38L Lightning. I have lots of photos from the Canal Zone and I believe I have a photo of a P-38 named the Georgia Peach.

Please contact me if you would like to discuss.
